We have been searching several years for the right ranch to lease and
have finally found it. We are very excited about the opportunity to hunt
a ranch of this caliber. We have secured the rights to hunt on 87,000
acres in Northeast New Mexico. This a very well managed ranch that is
conservatively grazed, creating ideal wildlife habitat.
We will be offering:

Antelope Hunts
This
ranch has some of the best looking antelope country a guy is going to
find in New Mexico. The ranch has historically produced low 70 to low 80
type bucks.

Elk
This ranch is a
rare gem in Northeast New Mexico. It has great habitat for elk that you
normally don’t find in this part of the state. The ranch has produced
300-350+ bulls in the past. A 370 bull was just shot last year right
across the fence on a neighboring ranch. No
draw needed for this tag.

Mule Deer
These hunts will take
place on the sandhill portion of the ranch. As you know Sagebrush Hunts
loves mule deer and we feel we have a hit a home run by finding this
area which is very similar to our Kansas ranch. These sandhills of New
Mexico have produced 170-180 type bucks in the past with potential for
bigger.

Merriam Turkey
These hunts will take place in some beautiful canyon settings in some of the same habitat the elk live in.

If you have any interest in these hunts contact Jeremy at 806-333-4358 or by emailing us at sagebrushhunts@gmail.comJeremy and Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03873235048420347548noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3016103909258626977.post-53973542222090422422015-02-07T11:29:00.002-08:002015-02-07T11:29:15.672-08:00Texas Pronghorn HuntsSagebrush Hunts has a few openings available for the 2015 Pronghorn Antelope Season.

We had the opportunity to take Calvin to an open horse show so he could compete in leadline. For those that aren't familiar, it's when an adult leads the little one around the ring. Cuteness factor is through the roof. It was a little slow for Cal's taste but he still enjoyed it. Especially when Pa was doing the leading.
After a lot of soul searching and calculating and praying and talking and... well you get the point -- we decided to build a home in Kansas for us to live in during the winter months and to house bird and deer hunters.

We are expected to be able to move in this fall! We will still graze cattle and spend the summers in Texas. We so love our ranching lifestyle in Texas, but for a lot of reasons we want to keep offering hunts in Kansas and have our own place to do so. We also look forward to Calvin going to school in Lakin, the same school system from which Jeremy graduated. He will get to spend more time with friends and cousins while we're up there as well.

It's not always easy moving back and forth, but we hope this will make it a little simpler and still allow us to live our gypsy lifestyle. We will continue to offer prairie dog and antelope hunts in Texas, and deer and (assuming it rains again someday) bird hunts in Kansas.

We want to thank all of our hunting clients for allowing us to make this possible! We so appreciate the fact that guiding hunts has allowed us to meet so many interesting people from all around the country. It truly has enriched our lives in so many ways.

Here's the progress as of this morning. Walls are finally going up!
After supper we all played soccer in the yard and it was one of those moments I've looked forward to since moving here. When we built the fence and planted the yard and planted the trees I always thought this would be a great place to play with a little one. And it really was.

Nope it still hasn't rained. But that's OK. And he's the reason why.

It's a great way to work horses, meet and visit with people, get dirty and sweaty and put a little money in his pocket.

But that means he's been gone all day which isn't something we're exactly used to. Yesterday Calvin and I went on a not-so-fun trip to the big city for a dentist appointment. It ended with bad news and another appointment made. Today, though, we got in a little fence fixing. Calvin was real helpful. He's actually only pretending to sleep. He spent plenty of time getting too close to tumbleweed-infested fence, all while assuring me, "There's no rattlesnakes in this neighborhood!" Here's hoping he's right!

Really, belt it out. It will warm you up. And if you haven't seen that movie, please do. It's for all ages. Jeremy, the "I don't watch comics" hater even found Frozen amusing.

Anyway, chilly day today dealing with this:

And makes me wish it were more of a day to do this:

Jeremy and Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03873235048420347548noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3016103909258626977.post-32799622941202818182014-04-29T17:58:00.002-07:002014-04-29T17:58:54.078-07:00I'm back. It's windy! I have been on a blogging hiatus of sorts. Sure, we've been posting a few hunting pics but that's it. I apologize. Mostly to myself because I read back through my old blogs and remembered I so enjoyed it.

Reading those also reminded me how enamoured I used to be with ranching and hunting and living on the prairie. But something changed. Yeah, I had an amazing little boy and got busy with that. And sure my freelance career has, well happened, I guess. And that means more writing for money and less time for myself.

But truly the thing that changed was it stopped raining. We haven't had a good year since 2010 and that takes its toll. On everything. If your income isn't directly related to the weather you can't understand but believe me when I say looking out your window for nearly four years and seeing brown, dead and dying grass makes you a little crazy. Or it does me anyway.

And it makes me grumpy and irritable and whiny and just plain no fun. But ya know what that doesn't do? Make it rain.

Being miserable doesn't seem to change anything at all about the weather no matter how much I wish it were that easy to change. So today, a day where the wind has blown dirt at a steady 35 miles per hour with gusts around 50 the ENTIRE day, I vow to continue blogging. I mean it's bad out. Watch the dust bowl documentary and it's just like that. Seriously nasty.

No matter how depressing it is living on this droughty prairie right now, I'm going to write something. Because ranching isn't all sunny skies and cowboying.Jeremy and Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03873235048420347548noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3016103909258626977.post-15535224372723274422013-10-31T15:34:00.001-07:002013-10-31T15:35:10.761-07:002014 Texas Pronghorn Hunt Report

Here are a few pictures of the antelope we shot during the 2012 Texas pronghorn season. Some real nice bucks considering the severe drought. We had some very fun hunts with some great clients!
After watching him break off from the herd of does and disappear over the hill in search of a hot doe and headed to some real rough deep cuts we thought we would not see him again that day. We continued to glass from our hill in hopes of seeing him again. About an hour later to our amazement we seen him about 2 miles away coming back towards us and the does. We bedded them down and had a text book stalk to within 180 yds but the buck was bedded behind a yucca with no shot. We waited about 30 minutes and he stood up and started feeding our way. At 160 yards Bill made a great shot with the muzzleloader and dropped him. Last year I watched this deer fight another buck and break his entire g2 off at the main beam and he got to live another year and grew another 10 inches or so. This buck ended up scoring 191 and was 29.5 inches wide.
This wrapped up our mule deer hunts for the year. A very good year considering the terrible drought we are in. Just in case you forgot or didn't see it we shot this 210 buck in the September muzzleloader season.
We finally were in the right place at the right time as our hunter Dennis was able to shoot this giant Kansas mule deer with the muzzleloader at 125 yards. We passed on this buck last year when he was a young 190 inch buck. After lots of scouting before season we finally turned him up and knew he was the one to hunt. This buck has had more luck than a cat and was able to outsmart us for 9 days before we finally got him. This buck is 32.5 inches wide and scored 210 6/8. We will post more pics when things slow down. Off to Texas to start antelope season.
Today is the first day of the muzzleloader season in Kansas. We are after a smart old buck that we passed on last year to give him one more year. Hopefully with a little luck he will show himself in the day light. Keep tuned for more updates here and on Facebook. The last day was exciting with a full day of belly crawling to get this buck.

We start Texas Pronghorn season tomorrow so standby for more pics of our success.Jeremy and Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03873235048420347548noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3016103909258626977.post-43998443781460466122011-09-20T19:13:00.000-07:002011-09-20T19:17:54.922-07:00Calvin Earl<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDmiamk28Ln5odH_e2L_hnA0FznQr4TlODI4VsQgIr0mlUrZ4J65Bxj84H9AXZI-66i8CkP8h-NehG9MCcNCMfl3NZs6JJpkQLiaExvqCHUxS9_x5FevobBN3FqCW7lzUrLqqrE67SnV7a/s320/PA053335.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654630917561269714" />
Please welcome the newest member of the Sagebrush Hunts crew: Calvin Earl. This past September we decided he was at his prime and wanted to hunt him. After many hot days in July, August and September we had found him with a small bachelor group of bucks. We estimated that this buck would score 220+! During the September Kansas muzzleloader season he eluded us for a couple days but finally on the 3rd day of the hunt our hunter was able to connect with the buck not once but twice. Both shots would of anchored any other buck but not this one. He made his escape into a large unharvested corn field. After many days of relentless searching we were unable to find him. Its a shame and a heartbreaker but that's the story of this unbelievable Mule Deer. We will continue to look for him and hopefully he will show up.

These pictures and video will hopefully will show you how big this buck was.

This is the same buck on the left in December 2009.

Jeremy and Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03873235048420347548noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3016103909258626977.post-1596301925281912382011-02-27T13:40:00.000-08:002011-02-27T13:51:04.136-08:00A Rare Find
Ever since we moved here, some good friends of ours have been telling us about this little out-of-the-way restaurant a little ways north of here that we should try. It’s called the Hoot Owl, and it’s at the old, historical headquarters of a ranch, kinda out in the middle of nowhere.

We finally got together and went up there and it was mighty impressive. The restaurant itself is down in this neat little canyon, and on the drive up there we checked out a couple historical landmarks, like the old Santa Fe Trail near Camp Nichols and a dig site where an entire dinosaur was found.

The restaurant itself, although only open on Fridays and Saturdays by reservation only, is a lovely little spot where ranchers (that’s about all there is in the surrounding 40 miles or so) can come together for excellent food and fellowship in historic surroundings. Not to mention, the service was impeccable. Driving up there was almost like stepping back to a simpler time, when eating out was about much more than insipidly filling your stomach.

Thanks to our friends Tom and Debbie for inviting us to eat there and the Hoot Owl for letting me borrow this picture from their web site.

Jeremy and Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03873235048420347548noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3016103909258626977.post-29925999451668731612011-02-22T08:42:00.000-08:002011-02-22T09:41:00.184-08:00It's a boy! While Jeremy has been hunting Coues deer and coyotes, I've been busy growing a little boy. That's right, a boy. During the anatomy sonogram at around 20 weeks, we discovered we have a son. Not only that, but all his anatomy is developing right on schedule. It took about 40 minutes to take all the measurements necessary to assure that he is healthy and it was truly amazing to spend that time in his world. He was almost constantly moving his arms and legs, rolling around and opening and closing his mouth. He wasn't a big fan of his face photographed, but we managed to get a few shots.

This is a profile of his head and upper torso and his mouth is open!

This one is in 3D.

Jeremy and Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03873235048420347548noreply@blogger.com0
